When we met up with the Australian songwriter Courtney Barnett during CMJ in NYC, it was her first time in the states. She had been staying in a long and narrow Chinatown studio apartment sublet for a couple of days to play a bunch of shows during the festival. She was loving NYC as any musician coming to the US for the first time would.
It was a Thursday morning when she invited us into her temporary home to play us "Avant Gardener," a song off her debut album, The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas. She had literally just woken up after a night playing shows which led to a very pleasant and relaxed version of the song.
